Namahage Museum

Namahage Museum

The Namahage Museum (なまはげ館) sits at the foot of Mt. Shinzan on Akita's Oga Peninsula and houses over 150 regional Namahage demon masks and costumes, bringing to life the UNESCO-recognised folklore tradition in which ogre-like figures visit homes each New Year's Eve to banish laziness and evil. It is directly adjacent to the Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum, and a combo ticket (¥1,100 adults) covering live Namahage performances at both venues is the recommended way to experience the site.

Planning your visit to Akita

Most of these attractions are clustered in walkable districts. Pair two or three per day, rather than trying to sprint between them — opening-hour overlap and ticket-window queues make a tight schedule riskier than it looks on a map. The individual guides linked above each call out the best time of day to visit and which nearby sights are worth bundling.
