Onomichi Temple Walk

Onomichi Temple Walk

The Onomichi Temple Walk (koji-meguri) is a free, self-guided 2.5 km walking course that links around 25 historic Buddhist temples along the hillside of Onomichi, Hiroshima. Winding up narrow stone lanes above the harbour, it passes anchor temples such as Senkoji (806 AD, with its ropeway and famous port views), Saikokuji with its giant straw sandals, and Jodoji, whose main hall and pagoda are National Treasures. Most grounds are free to enter; a handful charge small fees for treasure halls or guided tours. Allow 2-3 hours at a relaxed pace, longer to visit every temple, and grab a free multilingual map at the Tourist Information Center inside Onomichi Station before you set off.

Senkoji Park Ropeway

Senkoji Park Ropeway

The Senkoji Park Ropeway is Onomichi's signature aerial cable car, lifting visitors from the Sanroku base station near Nagae up the slope of Mount Senkoji to the summit and Senkoji Park in about three minutes. Operated by Onomichi City, it runs daily 09:00-17:15 with departures every 15 minutes, and costs ¥700 round trip or ¥500 one way for adults (children half price, under-6 free). The park and its PEAK observation deck at the top are free to enter and rank as Onomichi's best viewpoint over the Seto Inland Sea, making the one-way-up, walk-down route through the temple grounds and Cat Alley a local favorite.

Planning your visit to Onomichi

Most of these attractions are clustered in walkable districts. Pair two or three per day, rather than trying to sprint between them — opening-hour overlap and ticket-window queues make a tight schedule riskier than it looks on a map. The individual guides linked above each call out the best time of day to visit and which nearby sights are worth bundling.
