Toba is Japan's pearl capital — a compact coastal city on Ise Bay where Kokichi Mikimoto cultured the world's first pearl and where Ama free-divers still work the shoreline. It pairs naturally with a visit to nearby Ise, just 15–20 minutes away by rail. The attractions below each link to a full visitor guide with verified tickets, opening hours, and practical tips.

Mikimoto Pearl Island

Mikimoto Pearl Island

Mikimoto Pearl Island is a small island in Toba Bay, Mie Prefecture, connected to Toba Station by a pedestrian footbridge, where Kokichi Mikimoto cultured the world's first round pearl in 1893. The island houses the Pearl Museum, covering pearl-cultivation science and history including a Liberty Bell pearl replica; a live Ama women-diver demonstration stage; the Mikimoto Memorial Hall tracing the founder's life; and an on-site Akoya pearl boutique. Adult admission is approximately ¥1,650.

Admission is included in the Mikimoto Pearl Island island ticket (approximately ¥1,650 adults, 2026).

Toba Castle Ruins

Toba Castle Ruins

The Toba Castle Ruins mark the site of Toba-jo, a coastal fortress built around 1594 by naval commander Kuki Yoshitaka as the administrative centre of his Ise-Shima domain. Demolished in the Meiji era under Japan's castle-clearance orders, the hilltop now forms Shiroyama Park — a free, open green space above the Toba waterfront commanding panoramic views over Toba Bay and the island-studded Ise-Shima coastline. Historical signboards recount the Kuki clan's Warring States maritime legacy.
