Best Day Trips from Ise (2026): Toba, Futami & Shima

Ise's position on the Kintetsu and JR networks makes it a natural base for exploring Mie Prefecture. Toba, just 15 to 20 minutes east by rail, pairs Mikimoto Pearl Island with one of Japan's largest aquariums — both walkable from Toba Station. Push further and the Ise-Shima National Park opens across the pearl-cultivation bays of Ago, reachable at Kashikojima in under 45 minutes. Our Ise attractions guide covers the city itself; this article maps the best day trips.

Futami, 15 minutes by JR local, is home to the Meoto Iwa Wedded Rocks — two sea stacks joined by a sacred rope best seen at sunrise. North of Ise, Matsusaka is 30 minutes by Kintetsu and produces Japan's most celebrated wagyu beef. We last refreshed this guide in June 2026 with current rail fares and hours.

Key Takeaways

Sponsored
  • Toba is the easiest half-day extension from Ise — 15 to 20 minutes by Kintetsu or JR.
  • Mikimoto Pearl Island and Toba Aquarium sit within walking distance of Toba Station and fill four to five hours comfortably.
  • Futami's Meoto Iwa is ideal as a sunrise stop before the Ise shrine circuit; it adds only about 30 minutes of rail travel.
  • Pairing Toba with Kashikojima in a single day delivers the full Ise-Shima loop: pearl rafts, fresh seafood, and dramatic bay views.
  • The Kintetsu Ise-Shima Area Pass (2 days, ¥3,900 adult) covers unlimited limited express travel across the entire region.

Toba: Japan's Pearl Capital (15–20 min)

Kintetsu trains run from Ujiyamada Station to Toba every 20 to 30 minutes, taking about 15 minutes for around ¥340. JR trains on the Sangu Line from Ise-shi Station reach Toba in a similar 15 to 20 minutes. Either route leaves you within walking distance of both major sights.

Mikimoto Pearl Island is the birthplace of the cultured pearl (1893), and the island museum covers that history in detail. Adult entry is ¥1,650 and includes live ama diver demonstrations — women free-diving without tanks in traditional white suits — held three to four times daily, roughly 20 minutes each. The adjacent Toba Aquarium claims approximately 1,200 species, the most of any aquarium in Japan, and houses one of the country's only dugongs. Adult entry is ¥2,800; last entry is 4:30 PM. Budget two to three hours.

Good to know

Winter (December–March) brings oyster season to Toba — kaki-yaki grilled sets cost around ¥1,000 near the station. The amagoya hut dining experience at Osatsu (~20 min by bus) lets you eat fresh shellfish alongside working ama divers; reserve three to four days ahead.

More sightseeing ideas for the area, including Toba Castle ruins and Ishigami-san Shrine, are in our Toba attractions guide.

Futami and the Wedded Rocks (15 min by JR)

Sponsored

Futami lies on the JR Sangu Line between Ise-shi and Toba. A local train from Ise-shi reaches Futaminoura Station in about 15 minutes; the Wedded Rocks are a further 15-minute walk along the coast past Futami Okitama Shrine. The entire detour adds roughly one hour of travel, plus time at the shore.

The two rocks — Otokoiwa (nine metres, male) and Meotoiwa (four metres, female) — are joined by a half-tonne shimenawa rope re-tied three times a year. Between May and July the sun rises directly between them, drawing early visitors willing to arrive before 5:30 AM. Outside those months the rocks are still striking in low morning light. Entry is free; most visitors spend 45 minutes before continuing. You can hop off the JR train mid-route between Ise and Toba, making Futami a natural stop rather than a separate excursion.

Kashikojima and Ago Bay, Shima (~40 min)

Kashikojima is the Kintetsu Shima Line terminus, deep inside the sheltered inlets of Ago Bay. A Kintetsu Limited Express from Ujiyamada reaches Kashikojima in roughly 40 minutes; fare is around ¥900 plus a ~¥360 tokkyu surcharge, or covered entirely by the Ise-Shima Area Pass. Ago Bay is one of Japan's premier Akoya pearl-cultivation areas — hundreds of round wooden raft platforms dot the water. Sightseeing boats depart from Kashikojima Harbour on a 50-minute loop through the rafts for around ¥1,500 adult.

A small port market sells the region's seafood fresh: Ise-ebi spiny lobster is the prestige order in autumn and winter; grilled sazae turban shells over charcoal are the popular warm-weather snack. The late afternoon light across the pearl rafts rewards staying until the last boat returns.

Heads up

The 2-day Kintetsu Ise-Shima Area Pass (¥3,900 adult) includes all limited express trains and pays for itself if you cover Toba and Kashikojima in one day — the combined fares otherwise approach ¥2,000 per person each way. Buy it at Nagoya, Osaka-Namba, or Kyoto Kintetsu stations; check the official site for current pricing.

Matsusaka: Wagyu Beef Country (30 min North)

Sponsored

Matsusaka, 30 minutes north of Ise-shi by Kintetsu (fare ~¥670), produces Matsusaka gyu — a female Tajima-breed wagyu that rivals Kobe and Omi in prestige. The restaurant district is within ten minutes of the station. Sukiyaki and teppanyaki are the traditional preparations; lunch sets run ¥3,000 to ¥6,000 at mid-range spots, considerably more at the long-established Wadakin (founded 1878), where weekend bookings fill weeks ahead. Weekday walk-ins are more realistic. For visitors from Nagoya, Matsusaka makes a logical first stop going south before Ise, rather than a backtrack at day's end.

Planning Your Day Trips: Logistics and Routes

The natural Ise-Shima pairing is Toba with Kashikojima. Leave Ise by 9:00 AM, cover Mikimoto Pearl Island and Toba Aquarium before lunch, then board the Kintetsu Limited Express to Kashikojima for the afternoon bay cruise. Return to Ise by 5:30 PM, or continue from Kashikojima directly to Nagoya — about 2 hours 40 minutes — without backtracking.

For Futami, visit the Wedded Rocks at sunrise, return to Ise for the shrine circuit, then catch a late-morning Kintetsu to Toba. Our Ise-Toba itinerary maps this two-destination sequence in detail. For reaching the region, our Ise transport guide covers Kintetsu and JR options with 2026 fares — the Kintetsu Limited Express from Nagoya takes 80 to 90 minutes (¥2,810).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get from Ise to Toba?

Kintetsu runs from Ujiyamada (Ise) to Toba in about 15 minutes, every 20 to 30 minutes, for around ¥340. JR from Ise-shi Station takes a similar 15 to 20 minutes. The Ise-Shima Area Pass covers unlimited rides if you continue to Kashikojima the same day.

Can you combine Toba and Kashikojima in one day?

Yes — leave Ise by 9:00 AM, cover Mikimoto Pearl Island and Toba Aquarium in the morning, lunch in Toba, then take the 40-minute Kintetsu Limited Express to Kashikojima for the afternoon bay cruise, returning by 5:30 PM. The Ise-Shima Area Pass (¥3,900 adult) covers all limited express trains and pays for itself on a Toba + Kashikojima day.

When is the best time to see Meoto Iwa at Futami?

Sunrise visits between May and July are most dramatic — the sun rises directly between the two rocks. Aim to arrive by 5:30 AM in peak summer to catch the alignment. Futaminoura Station is 15 minutes from Ise-shi by JR local train, making a pre-shrine sunrise walk practical before the Ise Grand Shrine opens at dawn.

Is the Kintetsu Ise-Shima Pass worth buying?

The 2-day pass (¥3,900 adult) covers all Kintetsu trains including limited express across the Ise-Shima region. Combined fares for Toba and Kashikojima in one day approach ¥2,000, so the pass pays for itself easily. Buy at Nagoya, Osaka-Namba, or Kyoto Kintetsu stations.

Do Matsusaka beef restaurants need advance booking?

Weekend lunches at well-known spots like Wadakin book out days to weeks ahead. Weekday walk-ins are more realistic at mid-range restaurants near Matsusaka Station, but calling ahead is advisable. Budget ¥3,000 to ¥6,000 per person for a lunch set. Matsusaka is 30 minutes north of Ise-shi by Kintetsu (fare ~¥670).

The day trips from Ise fan out cleanly along the Kintetsu network with minimal backtracking. Toba rewards even a half-day with pearl history and one of Japan's best aquariums. Those with a full day should push to Kashikojima for the bay scenery and close the afternoon at the port market before the ride home. Futami works best as a sunrise opener before the shrine circuit, and Matsusaka as the final stop before Nagoya. If you are still planning what to see within Ise itself, our Ise attractions guide covers the Grand Shrine circuit, Oharaimachi, and local food in one place.
