4-Day Setouchi Itinerary: Onomichi to Shimanami Kaido to Iwakuni

Sponsored

This setouchi itinerary links Onomichi, the Shimanami Kaido, and Iwakuni into one four-day route. We built it for first-time visitors who want exact train and ferry times. Each leg below connects to the next stop, so you never backtrack across the region.

We wrote this for first-timers tackling the Seto Inland Sea in one trip. Repeat visitors can use it too, especially to connect Onomichi with Iwakuni for the first time. We last updated this route in July 2026, with current bike-rental and bridge-crossing fees.

The Setouchi Area Pass covers Shinkansen hops and a few ferries across the wider region. For just this Onomichi-to-Iwakuni loop, point-to-point tickets usually cost less than the multi-day pass. We break down when the pass earns its price further down this guide.

4 Days in Setouchi: At a Glance

Four days is enough to link Onomichi, the Shimanami Kaido, and Iwakuni without rushing. We front-load the cycling day, since legs feel best early before the afternoon heat builds. The pace below assumes moderate fitness and a few photo stops along the way.

Each day pairs one core destination with a realistic transit window, not a packed checklist. You'll spend roughly half of Day 3 simply moving between islands and cities. That transit time is normal here and worth planning around rather than fighting.

Trains and ferries run on fixed schedules, so timing your day around them beats winging it. We note typical durations rather than exact departure times, since schedules shift by season. Always confirm same-day connections at the station, especially for the Imabari ferry back to Onomichi.

  • Day 1: Onomichi cat alleys and temple views
    • Morning: Arrive in Onomichi and settle into town
    • Afternoon: Wander Cat Alley and the temple trail
    • Evening: Ride the Senkoji ropeway for sunset views
  • Day 2: Shimanami Kaido island-bridge cycling day
    • Morning: Pick up e-bikes near the ferry terminal
    • Afternoon: Cross bridges toward Kosanji Temple and beyond
    • Evening: Finish in Imabari or ferry back early
  • Day 3: Hiroshima transit and peace park calm
    • Morning: Ferry or bus back toward Onomichi
    • Afternoon: Shinkansen onward to central Hiroshima
    • Evening: Walk Peace Memorial Park at dusk
  • Day 4: Iwakuni's postcard bridge and castle
    • Morning: Local train from Hiroshima to Iwakuni
    • Afternoon: Cross Kintaikyo Bridge and Kikko Park
    • Evening: Ride the ropeway up to the castle

Your Day-by-Day Setouchi Itinerary: Onomichi to Iwakuni

Day 1 is short on transit and long on wandering, which suits jet-lagged arrivals well. Cat Alley gets crowded by mid-morning, so walk it right after dropping your bags at the station. For the full route through the alley and hillside temples, see our Onomichi cat alley and temple walk guide.

Day 2 covers the Shimanami Kaido, a roughly 70-kilometer chain of bridges linking six islands. Most first-timers should not attempt the full crossing to Imabari and back in one day. Our e-bike versus road bike logistics guide breaks down rental costs and drop-off points.

Bridges get windy by afternoon, so plan to finish the Kurushima-Kaikyo crossing before three o'clock. See this Shimanami Kaido view image for a sense of the bridge scenery ahead. Kosanji Temple on Ikuchijima costs about 1,400 yen and pairs well with a lunch stop in Setoda.

Day 3 is a transit-heavy day, moving from the islands back toward Hiroshima. The Peace Memorial Museum queue often forms by 9:30am on weekends, so an evening visit feels calmer. This Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park view image shows the A-Bomb Dome at dusk.

Day 4 is the shortest travel day, with Iwakuni barely 45 minutes from Hiroshima by local train. Cross the five-arched Kintaikyo Bridge day trip from Hiroshima for about 310 yen one way. Combine it with the castle ropeway ticket for roughly 970 yen and be back in Hiroshima by dinner.

Getting There and Around: Trains, Ferries, and Passes

Most travelers reach Onomichi by Shinkansen to Fukuyama, then a local transfer of about 15 minutes. Shin-Onomichi Station sits on the bullet-train line, while regular Onomichi Station serves local trains near the harbor. Our guide on how to get to Onomichi covers both stations and luggage-forwarding options.

Non-cyclists can skip pedaling entirely and still see the route by bus or ferry. A passenger ferry links Onomichi and Imabari in about two hours, with bikes allowed aboard. Local buses cover the same stretch in roughly 90 minutes when ferries are not running.

From Hiroshima, a local JR train reaches Iwakuni Station in about 45 minutes for around 760 yen. A faster Shinkansen Kodama option lands at Shin-Iwakuni in roughly 15 minutes, plus a short bus ride to the bridge. Either way, budget under an hour door to door from central Hiroshima.

The JR West Setouchi Area Pass costs about 22,000 yen for seven consecutive days. It covers Shinkansen rides, local buses, and most regional ferries across a wide area. That price only pays off if you extend into Okayama, Matsuyama, or Fukuoka beyond this loop. Confirm current pricing and coverage on the official JR West site before you commit.

Where to Stay Along the Route

Onomichi rewards staying near the harbor, within walking distance of both Cat Alley and the ferry terminal. Budget hostels run about 3,000 to 6,000 yen a night, while boutique guesthouses start around 12,000 yen. Book early if you are visiting during the spring or autumn cycling season.

Hiroshima makes the better base for Days 3 and 4, since Iwakuni sits under an hour away. Rooms near Hondori or Peace Memorial Park run 6,000 to 15,000 yen depending on season. Staying in Iwakuni itself saves little time and limits your dinner options after dark.

Peak cherry blossom and foliage weekends push rates up across every town on this route. Check our best time to visit Onomichi guide before locking in dates. Shoulder-season weekdays in May, June, or October offer the calmest rooms and the shortest lines.

Good to know

Spring (late March–April) and autumn (mid-October–November) are peak seasons for the Setouchi region, especially for cycling the Shimanami Kaido. Book e-bike rentals and accommodations at least a day or two in advance during these periods. Shoulder seasons like May, June, and early October offer far fewer crowds and similar weather, making them ideal for first-time visitors.

Book in Advance: Bikes, Ropeways, and Tickets

Most stops on this setouchi itinerary skip advance booking entirely. A few spots reward planning ahead by fifteen minutes or a full day. We list the handful worth reserving below.

Cherry blossom weekends in early April and foliage weekends in November draw the biggest crowds. Weekday visits in May, June, or October feel far calmer at every stop below. Shift your dates by a day or two and bookings become almost unnecessary.

Beyond that short list, walk-up access is the norm across Onomichi, the islands, and Iwakuni. Cash still rules at small rental counters and toll gates, so carry yen. Card payment is spreading, but do not count on it at rural stops.

  • Shimanami Kaido e-bike rental terminals
    • Spring and autumn weekends fill the main rental counters by mid-morning most years.
    • Book through the official cycling hub website one or two days ahead.
  • Kosanji Temple and the Hill of Hope
    • No advance ticket exists, but tour buses tend to arrive around midday.
    • Aim to reach the entrance before ten in the morning for quieter grounds.
  • Iwakuni Castle ropeway
    • The combination ticket for the bridge and ropeway sells only at the gate.
    • Midday queues can stretch fifteen minutes once tour groups reach Kikko Park.
  • Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge cycling toll gate
    • Cyclists pay a small toll in cash at the Sunrise Itoyama terminal.
    • No booking is needed, though carrying exact change speeds up the crossing.
Good to know

The Shimanami Kaido is exposed to sun and wind across open bridges and flat island terrain. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water if cycling. E-bikes are worthwhile for midday heat and headwinds, but the route is manageable on a standard bike if you start early (before 8 a.m.) and pace yourself. Most rental shops provide basic locks and repair kits, so plan your cycling day around station hours for support.

Should You Add a Day Trip to Miyajima?

Sponsored

Yes, if you can spare a fifth morning, Miyajima is the easiest add-on from Hiroshima. It sits just ten minutes by ferry from Miyajimaguchi Station, itself minutes from central Hiroshima. The floating torii gate looks best at high tide, so time your visit around the tide chart.

See this Itsukushima Shrine view image for the classic torii-at-sunset shot. Shrine admission runs about 300 yen, and day-trip crowds peak between late morning and early afternoon. An early ferry beats the tour-bus rush by a wide margin.

Kurashiki's canal district and the Ohara Museum of Art make a strong alternative day trip. Reaching it, though, means backtracking west through Okayama, adding roughly three hours each way from this route. Save Kurashiki for a longer trip that already starts or ends near Okayama.

For this specific four-day loop, Miyajima wins on time and access every time. Save Kurashiki for a future trip built around Okayama instead. If you want to stretch the whole route further, our Iwakuni itinerary guide covers extra stops near the bridge.

Doing This Route on a Budget

This four-day loop still works well on a tight budget without changing the route. Skip the Setouchi Area Pass and buy point-to-point tickets instead, since we already covered why the pass rarely pays off on this loop alone. A standard pedal bike at the Shimanami Kaido rental counters costs noticeably less per day than an e-bike, and the ride is still manageable if you're not in a rush.

Stick to hostel dorms in Onomichi and Hiroshima, which start around 3,000 yen a night, and eat from convenience stores and station bento counters rather than sit-down restaurants for a few meals. Kikko Park in Iwakuni is free to walk, and the Kintaikyo Bridge crossing runs about 310 yen one way; treat the 970 yen ropeway-and-castle combo ticket as the one splurge worth cutting if you're watching every yen.

None of these swaps add extra travel time, so the four-day pace from our day-by-day breakdown above still holds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for a setouchi itinerary?

Four days covers Onomichi, the Shimanami Kaido, and Iwakuni without feeling rushed. Add a fifth day if you want to include Miyajima or extend cycling across the full 70-kilometer route to Imabari. Three days works only if you skip the full island crossing.

Do you need to rent a bike for the Shimanami Kaido?

Renting a bike is the classic way to cross the Shimanami Kaido, but it is not required. Buses and a passenger ferry connect Onomichi and Imabari for travelers who prefer not to cycle. See our Shimanami Kaido without a bike guide for exact routes.

Is the Setouchi Area Pass worth it for this route?

Not usually, if this four-day loop is your whole trip in Setouchi. The pass costs about 22,000 yen for seven consecutive days, aimed at travelers covering far more ground. Point-to-point train and ferry tickets for Onomichi, the islands, and Iwakuni typically add up to less.

Can you visit Miyajima from this Onomichi to Iwakuni route?

Yes, Miyajima fits neatly into Day 3 as a short detour from Hiroshima. A passenger ferry from Miyajimaguchi takes about ten minutes to reach the floating torii gate. Plan on a half day if you want to see the shrine at high tide.

What is the best season for this Onomichi to Iwakuni trip?

Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather for cycling the Shimanami Kaido. Late April and early November are the busiest weekends, so book bike rentals a day ahead. Summer works too, but midday heat on exposed bridges can slow your pace.

This setouchi itinerary turns three separate day trips into one clean route. Onomichi's temples, the Shimanami Kaido's bridges, and Iwakuni's wooden arch each earn their place. Four days is enough, though a fifth for Miyajima never hurts.

Book the e-bike and the castle ropeway combo ticket ahead of the busy weekends. Let the trains and ferries handle the rest of the timing for you. Our Onomichi, Shimanami Kaido, and Iwakuni guides linked above cover every stop in more depth.
