Kinpusen-ji

Kinpusen-ji is the head temple of Shugendo, a syncretic mountain-worship tradition, perched on Yoshinoyama in Nara Prefecture's Yoshino district. Its Zao-do Hall, rebuilt in 1592, is the second-largest wooden structure in Japan and enshrines three massive, fierce blue-skinned Zao Gongen statues. Along with the adjacent Kinpu-jinja Shrine, the temple was inscribed in 2004 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.'

The individual guides linked above each call out the best time of day to visit and which nearby sights are worth bundling.
