Last updated October 2026: Takayama Station sits at 22-2 Showamachi 1-chome and is the entry point for the old town, Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi. This guide covers the exits, ticket gates, lockers, train and bus connections, and the mistakes that cost visitors time. It also explains why you cannot arrive by Shinkansen.

Takayama Station Overview: The Gateway to Hida

Takayama Station serves the JR Takayama Main Line, which is not a Shinkansen route. Local sources describe the station as the entrance to Takayama, and the current building was completed in 2016. Architect Hiroshi Naito is credited with the redesign. Inside, you find a staffed Midori no Madoguchi ticket office, waiting rooms and shops. Ticket office hours are typically 6:00 a.m. to 8:50 p.m. Plan any ticket purchases or seat reservations inside that window. For wider context on what to do once you arrive, start with our Takayama attractions guide.

Navigating the Station Layout and Exits

Layout is simple once you know the key point: the ticket gates are on the 2nd floor. Waiting rooms and shops share that floor. A convenience store next to the gates sells snacks, drinks and bento lunch boxes. Café, coin lockers and tourist information sit on the first floor, just outside the East Exit. There is only one set of ticket gates, so you cannot board from the wrong side.

  • East Exit (Norikura-guchi): use this for the Nohi Bus Center, tourist information and the walk toward the old town.
  • West Exit (Hakusan-guchi): use this for residential streets and hotels on that side of the tracks.
  • Skybridge: a walkway linking the two sides, open 24 hours a day, even when the ticket gates are closed.
  • Ticket gates: 2nd floor, one set only.

The 24-Hour Skybridge and Festival Displays

Skybridge access matters if you arrive late or leave early. You can cross from east to west at any hour without a ticket. Takayama Festival items are displayed along the walkway. Display includes the lower halves of two full-size yatai floats. Inside 14 showcases, you can see yatai wheels, decorations and builders' tools. Spend ten minutes here while you wait for a train. It previews the festival culture you will meet in town.

Getting to Takayama Station: Routes and Trade-offs

No Shinkansen reaches Takayama. From Tokyo or Osaka, you change at Nagoya to the Limited Express Hida. From Kanazawa, you ride the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama and change there. Via Nagoya, the Tokaido Shinkansen takes 100–120 minutes. Then the Hida runs about 140 minutes, roughly once an hour. Total journey is about 4.5 hours and around ¥16,000. Via Toyama, the Hida takes about 90 minutes. Only two or three connections a day fit a four-hour trip from Tokyo. Other times stretch to about five hours. The Matsumoto route by train and bus takes 5.5 hours and costs ¥11,020. Highway buses from Busta Shinjuku run several times a day. They take 5.5 hours and cost ¥8,000. Reserve online through Willer. Fares and timetables change, so confirm before booking.

Rail Passes and the JR Pass Activation Trap

Japan Rail Pass holders ride the Hida without extra charge. A supplement applies only if you take the faster Nozomi between Tokyo and Nagoya. The mistake to avoid is arriving with an unexchanged exchange order. Passes cannot be exchanged or activated at Takayama Station. Exchange at an airport office or a major station first. Tokyo Station offices at the Marunouchi North and Yaesu North exits both open 07:30 to 20:00. Bring your passport. If you are building a regional route, read our Takayama-Hokuriku pass guide. Good to know

Tokyo Station exchange offices open 07:30 to 20:00, which leaves room before a Tokyo-to-Takayama departure.

Takayama Nohi Bus Center: Beyond the Rails

Nohi Bus Center adjoins the station at the East Exit. You can walk from platform to bus bay in minutes. It is the main base for the mountains and villages around Takayama. The regional pass page lists the bus network that the area passes cover. Check it before you pay cash fares.

  • Shirakawa-go: about 50 minutes to Ogimachi. Suganuma is about 30 minutes further by local bus toward Shin-Takaoka, and Ainokura about 45 minutes from Ogimachi.
  • Kamikochi: about 1 hour to Hirayu Onsen, then another 25–30 minutes on the bus into Kamikochi.
  • Matsumoto, Kanazawa, Toyama and Nagoya: long-distance services also leave from this terminal.
  • Shinjuku: the Chuo Kosoku highway bus connects to Tokyo.

Booking Advice for Buses

Each route has its own bay, so you can buy tickets at the terminal without confusion. Round-trip tickets to Ogimachi are sold alone or bundled with Suganuma and Ainokura. Multi-day options also exist. Long-distance highway buses are the ones to reserve ahead. Routes such as Shinjuku and Kamikochi are best checked in advance for the season. Confirm current timetables with the operator, because schedules change by season.

Takayama Station Lockers and Baggage Delivery

Takayama station lockers run 24 hours a day and take cash only. Maximum storage is 3 days including the first day. Two banks exist: one at i-CAFE and one at Nohi Bus Center. Prices are ¥400, ¥600 and ¥700 by size. Staffed storage is available through TABINO Satellite and Yamato Transport near the station. Yamato also offers luggage shipping. In the city, SAGAWA Express runs a hand baggage counter inside the Hida Takayama tourist information counter. Ecbo cloak is another option. Luna Sol collects bags at a set place and time, such as the station or your hotel, and delivers within the former Takayama city. Reservations are required for that service.

Tip

Lockers run 24 hours a day, while ticket office hours are 6:00 a.m. to 8:50 p.m., so storage works after the counter closes.

Getting Around: Sarubobo Bus, Machinami Bus or Walking

Station and bus center are about a ten-minute walk from the old town, on the opposite side of the Miyagawa River. Most sights in the center are walkable. Hida no Sato and Matsuri no Mori are the exceptions. Sarubobo Bus runs every 30 minutes between the station and Hida no Sato. Every second service continues to Matsuri no Mori. Machinami Bus loops around the town center. Fare is ¥100 per ride on these buses. A 1-day pass costs ¥500 and covers all four tourist lines. It pays off after five rides. Our Hida Folk Village guide explains what to see after the 10–15 minute ride.

Facilities: Tourist Information, Food and Accessibility

Hida Takayama Tourist Information sits outside the East Exit. It opens 08:30 to 18:30 from April to October, and 08:30 to 17:00 from November to March. English-speaking staff handle accommodation, transport questions and baggage storage. For a quick bento, use the convenience store by the gates. For a sit-down meal, our Hida beef dining guide lists places to eat. If you have an hour before a train, our Retro Museum visitor guide helps you decide. The museum's official site is the place to check opening details. Accessibility details such as elevators and restrooms should be confirmed with station staff on arrival.

Where to Stay Near Takayama Station

Staying by the station suits early bus departures. You can walk to the Nohi Bus Center and check bags without a taxi. Old town stays trade that convenience for atmosphere. The old town is walkable from most popular hotels, so you are not forced into one choice. One minshuku listed by a reputable guide is a 6-minute walk from the station, and a modern hotel is described as walkable. Some ryokan outside town run shuttles, and one needs a reservation at least 1 day ahead. Compare options in our Takayama hotel guide.

Pro-Tips and Mistakes to Avoid at Takayama Station

Four errors repeat. First, visitors expect a Shinkansen and miss the transfer at Nagoya or Toyama. Second, travelers try to activate a JR Pass here, which is not possible. Third, they carry bags into town when lockers cost only ¥400 to ¥700. Fourth, they skip the Sarubobo bus and pay for taxis to Hida no Sato. Check the last Hida departure before a late dinner. Use the 24-hour skybridge if you arrive after the ticket office closes at 8:50 p.m.
