The rule that prevents a bad pass
IC card or transit pass: which is better?
Use an IC card and pay as you go when the day is light, routes cross several operators or a pass saves only a few hundred yen. Buy a city pass when the fares on its covered lines clearly exceed its price. Convenience matters too: a marginal saving is rarely worth rerouting the day to stay inside a network.

IC is payment
Stored value makes transfers convenient; it is not an unlimited-ride pass or automatic discount.
Coverage beats ride count
Six rides do not justify a subway pass when four of them are on JR or a private railway.

A usable break-even check
Pass price ÷ covered fare
A ¥1,000 pass needs five ¥200 covered rides to tie. The word covered is the entire decision.
Use fares, not attractions
Coupon books may add value, but the tool never invents transport savings from attractions you may not visit.
Separate every operator
Metro, Toei, JR, private rail, bus, tram and ferry remain separate where coverage differs.
Align the valid window
A rolling ticket can cover an evening plus the next day; a calendar ticket normally cannot.
Treat a close result as uncertain
If the margin is small, enter exact route-app fares and choose flexibility unless the pass has another real benefit.
Transit pass coverage traps
Unlimited travel only helps inside the product's network. An app may suggest a faster line that the pass does not cover, and forcing a slower covered route can erase the practical value of a small saving.
- Tokyo Subway Tickets exclude JR, private railways, buses and most airport access.
- Kyoto bus coverage varies by operator and section; JR and private trains remain separate.
- Osaka Enjoy Eco covers Osaka Metro and most city buses, not JR or private railways.
- Hiroshima products differ on bus and ferry coverage; the cheapest streetcar pass is not the broadest pass.

Pay-as-you-go estimate
The quick estimate uses an official low, middle or upper fare band for each selected mode. Travelers can replace any band with the exact average one-way fare from their route app. Adult and child values are multiplied by the whole party and every boarding entered.
Pass search
The optimizer checks every eligible one-, two- and three-day sequence. A covered mode becomes zero-fare during that pass window; an uncovered or conservatively grouped mode remains pay as you go. Weekend prices and visitor eligibility are applied before ranking.
Deliberate exclusions
Refundable IC-card deposits and stored value are not counted as transport cost. Optional attraction discounts are described but never subtracted from the transport result. Airport transfers, intercity tickets, route timing, service disruptions and seat reservations are outside this local calculator.

Practical questions
Japan IC card and transit pass FAQ
Is a Suica or PASMO cheaper than a day pass?+
Suica and PASMO are payment methods, so they are not automatically cheaper or more expensive. Paying as you go usually wins on a light day or when rides are split across JR, subway and private railways. A day pass can win when enough rides fall inside that pass's exact operator coverage.
What is the difference between Suica and PASMO?+
For an ordinary visitor using trains, subways, buses and participating shops, Suica and PASMO are broadly interchangeable across the nationwide IC network. The important comparison for this calculator is IC-card pay as you go versus a limited-area unlimited-ride pass, not Suica versus PASMO branding.
Does the Tokyo Subway Ticket cover JR trains?+
No. The 24-, 48- and 72-hour Tokyo Subway Tickets cover Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. They do not cover JR East, private railways or buses. Enter JR and private-rail rides separately so the calculator keeps those fares outside the pass.
Is the Tokyo 72-hour subway pass worth it?+
At the current adult price of ¥2,000, it needs roughly ten average ¥200 covered subway rides over its 72-hour window. It becomes stronger when most destinations sit on Tokyo Metro or Toei lines and weaker when the route repeatedly uses JR, Yurikamome or private railways.
Is the Kyoto Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass worth it?+
The ¥1,100 adult pass starts to make financial sense around five ordinary ¥230 bus rides, or a smaller mix of buses and subway rides whose covered fares exceed ¥1,100. JR, Keihan, Hankyu, Kintetsu, Randen and Eizan rides are not automatically covered.
Does Osaka have a cheaper weekend subway pass?+
Yes. The Osaka Metro Enjoy Eco Card is ¥820 for an adult on weekdays and ¥620 on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. The calculator changes the price when you mark the day as a weekend or holiday and keeps JR and private-rail rides outside its coverage.
Does the calculator include children?+
Yes. It prices the whole party using published adult and child fares for ages 6 to 11. Most child passes are half price, but the Visit Hiroshima tourist pass does not publish a separate child tier on its English product page, so that result is clearly cautioned.
Should I count transfers as separate rides?+
Count a new paid boarding or journey, not a transfer that stays inside the same fare gate and does not create another fare. A return trip counts twice. If a route planner shows one combined fare, count it once and use that fare in the advanced override when needed.
Does the comparison include IC-card deposits?+
No. A refundable card deposit and money loaded onto the card are not transport spending by themselves. The calculation compares fares actually consumed with pass purchase prices and deliberately excludes refundable stored value.
Are the fares live and exact?+
No. Official fare bands, pass prices and coverage rules were checked on 2026-07-28. The quick result is a planning estimate. If the saving is small, replace each mode's average with exact one-way fares from a route app and verify the linked operator page before purchase.
