On this page
Last updated October 2026. The ferry from Kagoshima to Okinawa takes about 25 hours, leaves around 18:00 and reaches Naha around 19:00 the next day. Marix Line and A-Line Ferry share the route on alternating days, with stops at four Amami islands on the way. This guide covers ports, timetables, cabin classes, booking windows, vehicles and the mistakes that cost travelers a sailing.
Ferry From Kagoshima to Okinawa: The Quick Answer
Expect a slow, overnight-plus-daytime crossing. The full run to Naha takes about 25 hours. Sailings leave Kagoshima New Port at 18:00 and arrive in Naha at 19:00 the next day. Budget roughly ¥16,000 or more one way for a standard-class seat. Treat that as a planning figure and confirm the current fare table before you book.
Okinawa's official visitor site lists the same 25-hour total for the Naha–Kagoshima service. Our editorial view is that the ferry suits travelers with time to spare. It also suits anyone moving a car, bringing bulky luggage or stopping in the Amami Islands. Nobody can do this as a day trip, because the crossing alone consumes a full day and night.

Marix Line and A-Line: Who Sails on Your Date
You rarely choose an operator. On the Amami–Okinawa route, A-Line Ferry and Marix Line operate alternately. Marix says it does not take reservations for A-Line sailing dates. Your travel date decides the company.
Marix runs Queen Coral Cross and Queen Coral Plus. A-Line runs Ferry Akebono and Ferry Naminoue. A US military traveler who used both companies on one trip reported little difference in service or cost. That matches our reading of the fare structures.
One detail helps if you plan a return trip. Marix says its round-trip discount still applies if you ride an A-Line sailing within the valid period. Vehicles with a reservation can also use either company.
Check the Marix Line operation status page before you travel. In October 2026 it listed Queen Coral Cross cancellation notices and a fare discount system change. Read both notices if your date is close.

Route and Timetable: The Island Stops
The southbound ship works down the Amami chain. A-Line's published downbound timetable shows these times from Kagoshima New Port at 18:00. Marix may differ slightly, so confirm your sailing.

Kagoshima New Port vs Main Port: Avoid the Wrong Pier
Kagoshima has two ferry ports. The Okinawa route leaves from Kagoshima New Port. Kagoshima Main Port serves different inter-island routes, such as services to Kikaijima and some Amami Oshima ports.
A-Line lists its New Port terminal at 45-1 Jonan-cho, Kagoshima City. Marix says passenger and vehicle check-in happens on the 3rd floor of the Amami & Okinawa Ferry Terminal. Checked and special baggage is handled on the 1st floor.
Parking needs planning. Marix says Kagoshima New Port has a paid public lot and no free temporary parking. Check the prefecture's port page for the current lot details.
If you arrive early, eat before you board. Our Kagoshima Wagyu: Cuts, Styles and Prices for 2026 covers pre-departure meals. Onboard cafeterias run only during meal hours.
Booking and Boarding Logistics for the Kagoshima Ferry
Reservations open one month before the travel date, on the matching calendar date. Marix says the Kagoshima office opens bookings at 8:30 on weekdays and Saturdays. The Tokyo and Okinawa sales offices open at 9:00 on weekdays. A-Line's booking window runs from one month to 3 days before departure, until 11:59 PM.
Book online through an English-language ferry booking site, by phone or at a port office. A US writer who made the trip reported that dealing with the companies directly was easier with a Japanese speaker. He also bought tickets at the port about an hour before boarding. That worked for him as a walk-up passenger, but we would not rely on it in peak weeks. Marix warns that passenger space can sell out.
Boarding steps differ for foot passengers and drivers. Complete the Boarding Application Form at the port counter. Voucher holders follow the same steps and pay any fare owed. Bring a government photo ID.
- Foot passengers without baggage: finish procedures at least 1 hour before departure
- Check-in closes 30 minutes before departure
- Checked baggage, special baggage or pet room: finish passenger check-in 1 hour 30 minutes before departure from Kagoshima
- Vehicles to Amami Oshima or Tokunoshima: check in 2 hours before departure
- Vehicles to Okinoerabu, Yoron or Okinawa: check in 2 hours 30 minutes before departure
- Carry-on limit: two pieces, up to 30 kg combined
Cabin Classes and Life Onboard
Classes control sleeping arrangements, not access to public areas. First class is a private cabin. Second class is a shared bunk space. Third class is a large open room with mats on the floor.
Marix says a Standard Berth on Queen Coral Plus sleeps eight in four bunk units, with a window. A Standard Western-style Room holds 60 passengers in 30 bunk units and has no windows. Marix lists berth surcharges of ¥630 to ¥6,280 and Western-style surcharges of ¥310 to ¥1,040, depending on the route.
Outlets help on a 25-hour trip. Marix says each seat in the First-Class and Second-Class sleeper compartments has an outlet. Free Wi-Fi covers Suite Rooms, Deluxe Rooms and the entrance and information desk area. Marix does not guarantee connectivity, so buy an eSIM or download offline entertainment.
Queen Coral Plus has a public bath with ocean views. Queen Coral Cross has shower rooms only. Bring your own towel and soap. The onboard shop sells towels, shampoo and motion-sickness medicine, with limited stock.
Food is basic. Onboard cafeterias serve hot meals only at meal hours. Vending machines sell food and drinks, including alcohol. Pack snacks for the gaps. Lockers are available, including lockers for valuables.
- Private cabin: best for sleep and privacy
- Second class bunks: shared, with shelf space and lockers nearby
- Open-mat room: fine for daytime legs and short hops
- Dining: limited hours, so carry snacks
- Bathing: public bath on Queen Coral Plus; showers only on Queen Coral Cross
Ferry vs Flight: Which Fits Your Trip
Competitors say the ferry is cheaper, then stop. A fair comparison also counts the lost day. The ferry consumes about 25 hours, including a night at sea. A flight does not. Our editorial assessment is that the ferry wins on baggage, vehicles and island stops, and flying wins on time.
The ferry also wins if you plan to stop in the Amami Islands. A US writer who made the trip noted that you can fly to all four Amami islands the ferry stops at. He still preferred the ferry because he was driving the car he would use in Okinawa.
| Factor | Ferry | Flight |
|---|---|---|
| Travel time | About 25 hours | Much shorter; check current schedules |
| Cost | About ¥16,000+ one way for a standard seat (planning figure) | Varies by date; compare current fares |
| Luggage | Two carry-on pieces up to 30 kg each, plus checked baggage | Airline limits apply |
| Vehicles | Cars and motorcycles carried with reservation | Not possible |
| Experience | Overnight at sea, Amami stops | Direct and fast |
Cars, Motorcycles and Pets on the Ferry
Marix says passenger cars, cargo vehicles and motorcycles can sail. Reservations are required for vehicles. The car fare includes a second-class cabin fare for one driver. Bring your vehicle inspection certificate at check-in.
Some aggregator pages say cars and pets are not allowed on this route. Marix's official FAQ says otherwise. Follow the operator's current rules and confirm your booking directly.
Vehicle class depends on the license plate. Marix classifies plates beginning with 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 as passenger cars, subject to its list. Plates beginning with 1, 2, 8 or 9 can be commercial. Check the full table for number combinations.
Small pets use a designated pet room. Marix charges ¥1,570 per cage for departure or arrival at Kagoshima. It charges ¥1,050 between Amami islands or between Amami and Okinawa. You supply the carrier. Pets may not stay in passenger cabins, except certified assistance dogs.
Ash affects drivers. A US writer reported that Sakurajima had been smoking for days and left a fine layer of ash on his car while it waited on the pier. Read our Sakurajima ferry and ash guide before you queue.
Island-Hopping the Amami Archipelago
Marix does not allow mid-trip disembarkation on a single ticket. Book a separate reservation for each leg if you want to stop. Or look at its Yui Passport, a 14-day unlimited-ride pass between Kagoshima, the Amami Islands and Okinawa.
A flight reaches all four Amami islands, but a ticket won't let you get off mid-trip. Marix's 14-day Yui Passport offers unlimited rides on the route.
Marix describes Okinoerabu as about 552 kilometers south of mainland Kyushu. It describes Yoron as about 563 kilometers south of Kagoshima and 23 kilometers north of Okinawa Island. Marix also notes that Amami Oshima has a World Natural Heritage registration.
A US writer spent 24 hours each on Amami Oshima and Okinoerabu. He visited Saigo Takamori-related sites and a ruined Ryukyuan castle. We would give each island at least one full day if your schedule allows.

Mistakes to Avoid and Weather Risks
Wrong port is the costliest error. Confirm New Port on your ticket and in your navigation app.
Reservations open one month ahead, so book early. Cancelling a specified-voyage booking costs ¥200 per ticket up to 7 days before boarding.
Typhoons can disrupt service from June to November, according to a US writer who made the trip. He delayed his sailing by a day during a late-season storm. Rough seas can also stop a ship landing at an island. Passengers may be carried to the next stop. Okinawa's official visitor site tells travelers to treat all ferry times as estimates and check for schedule changes in poor weather.
Cancellation fees rise as departure approaches. For tickets with a specified voyage bought at a window or agency, Marix lists ¥200 per ticket up to 7 days before boarding. It lists 10% of ticket value up to 2 days before and 30% before departure. After departure the fee is 100%. Phone-only reservations carry no cancellation fee.
Plan your Naha arrival. The ship docks around 19:00, so book your first night nearby. Marix says Naha Airport is about 15 minutes from Naha Port by car. Yui Rail from the airport to Asahibashi Station takes about 10 minutes, then roughly 10 minutes on foot.
