Sumiyoshi Festival: July 30–August 1

Sumiyoshi Festival closes Osaka's traditional summer-festival season with purification rituals at Sumiyoshi Taisha. The confirmed 2026 dates are July 30 for the eve festival, July 31 for the annual grand festival and summer purification, and August 1 for the mikoshi procession toward Sakai.

Sumiyoshi-Taisha Station on the Nankai Main Line and Sumiyoshi-Torii-mae on the Hankai tram are the simplest approaches. Universal Studios Japan Seasonal Events

Universal Studios Japan is not a city festival, but its limited seasonal programs matter if your Osaka dates are fixed. Universal Cool Summer runs from July 1 to August 26, 2026. The evening Universal Summer Matsuri Nights program normally runs from 18:30 to 21:00 during that period, with exceptions on selected dates.

Osaka Classic and Osaka Rakugo Festival in September

Osaka Classic runs from September 6 to 12, 2026 across the Midosuji and Nakanoshima areas. Osaka City has confirmed 60 performances: 40 free and 20 paid, ranging from solo recitals to ensembles and orchestra programs. Free venues can restrict entry when full, so arrive before the published start rather than treating a free concert as guaranteed admission.

The official Osaka Classic 2026 notice includes the daily schedules and venue guidance. Later in the month, the seventh Osaka Rakugo Festival runs September 18–23, bringing performers from different schools to venues around the city. Kishiwada Danjiri Festival: September and October

Kishiwada Danjiri is known for teams pulling heavy carved wooden floats through the streets and taking corners at speed. The September 2026 festival holds trial runs on September 6 and 18, the eve festival on September 19, and the main festival on September 20. A separate October cycle has a trial run on October 4, an eve festival on October 10, and main events on October 11.

These are not interchangeable dates: September centers on the coastal Kishiwada and Haruki districts, while October covers other districts. Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks: October 17

The 2026 Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival is on Saturday, October 17, with the display scheduled to begin at 19:30. It takes place along the Yodo River between the Shin-Midosuji/Shin-Yodogawa Bridge and the Route 2 Yodogawa Bridge. General viewing is free, while reserved-seat prices depend on the section.

The date is later than the festival's older summer pattern, so do not use a generic August listing. Expect a long walk from the station, download any ticket before joining the crowd, and plan a slower return rather than the last train.

Festival of the Lights: November 3–January 31

Osaka's Festival of the Lights runs for 90 days from November 3, 2026, through January 31, 2027, although only some regional programs continue after New Year's Day. The Midosuji Illumination runs November 3–December 31, with lights scheduled from around 17:00 to 01:00. Osaka Hikari Renaissance runs December 11–25 around Osaka City Hall and Nakanoshima Park.

The 2026 Osaka Grand Sumo Tournament ran from March 8 to 22 at EDION Arena Osaka, so it has already finished. The Japan Sumo Association's official schedule lists the next Osaka tournament for March 14–28, 2027, with advance ticket sales beginning February 6.
