Fukuyama Day Trip from Hiroshima: Castle and Tomonoura Guide
Plan a Fukuyama day trip from Hiroshima: how to get there, Fukuyama Castle, Tomonoura port, timing, costs and who should skip it.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: a Fukuyama Hiroshima Japan day trip points you to the second-largest city in Hiroshima Prefecture, on the Seto Inland Sea between Okayama and Hiroshima City. Fukuyama Castle sits by the station, and the old harbor of Tomonoura is the stronger draw. Treat the city as a half-day to full-day add-on, not a replacement for Hiroshima City or Miyajima.
Fukuyama in Hiroshima, Japan: is it worth a day trip?

It is worth it if you like castle towns and old harbors more than headline sights. Fukuyama is 103 km from Hiroshima City and 58 km from Okayama City, according to the city's own overview. That puts it roughly midway on the Sanyo corridor, so it fits a travel day between the two. Skip it if you have a single day for the region. In that case, start with our one-day Hiroshima and Miyajima plan. For the wider list of sights, see Hiroshima Attractions: The Complete 2026 Pillar Guide.
- Go if you want a castle plus a harbor town in one outing.
- Go if you are already riding the Sanyo Shinkansen and can break the journey.
- Skip if you have only one day for Hiroshima and Miyajima.
- Skip if you dislike limited English signage and bus-dependent sightseeing.

How to get to Fukuyama from Hiroshima, Okayama and Osaka
Fukuyama is a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen, and local JR trains also serve it. Hiroshima City lies 103 km to the west, and Okayama City lies 58 km to the east. Osaka works only as a long day. Our guide to the Osaka to Hiroshima day trip covers that corridor. Exact fares and journey times change by train type, so confirm them in the JR West timetable before you go.

| Starting point | Relation to Fukuyama | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Hiroshima City | 103 km away, per the city overview | Easy add-on or standalone day |
| Okayama City | 58 km away, per the city overview | Natural stopover |
| Osaka | Farther along the same rail corridor | Long day; commit to one stop |
| Onomichi | Neighboring port on the same coast | Pair only if you have a full day |
Fukuyama Castle and the station area
Fukuyama Castle stands next to the shinkansen station, so it works as a first stop even on a short layover. The city overview credits Katsunari Mizuno with naming Fukuyama and building Hisamatsu Castle after becoming lord in 1619. A July 2025 listing snippet showed hours of 9:00–17:00 and an admission of ¥500. Treat both as unconfirmed, and check the castle museum or city tourism page before you plan around them. Air raids on August 8, 1945 reduced 80% of the city to rubble, so little of the old town remains outside the castle grounds and the harbor.

- Allow a short visit if you only have a layover between trains.
- Check closing days before you leave the station.
- Look for coin lockers at the station and confirm they exist before relying on them.
Tomonoura: the old port town
Tomonoura is why most visitors come. It sits on the tip of the Numakuma Peninsula and has served as a harbor with favorable tides and winds since ancient times. Poems in the Manyoshu mention it. Ashikaga Takauji held his final war council there before attacking Kyoto. In 1576, the last Muromachi shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, entered Tomo Castle there. Visitors can still see traces of old streets, shrines, temples and port facilities. Read the official Fukuyama overview for the background. Bus fare, frequency and the last return from Tomonoura are not confirmed in our sources. Check the current timetable on arrival at Fukuyama Station.

Sample half-day and full-day plans
A half day covers the castle and the station area, then an onward train. A full day adds Tomonoura by bus. Block your time backward from the last return bus, not forward from the castle. Neither plan needs invented opening hours: confirm each stop's times first.
| Version | Route | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Half day | Station, Fukuyama Castle, onward train | Arriving on a closing day |
| Full day | Castle, bus to Tomonoura, harbor walk, bus back | Missing the last bus |
- Morning: Fukuyama Castle by the station.
- Midday: bus to Tomonoura.
- Afternoon: harbor and old streets, then leave well before the last bus.

Costs, passes and luggage
The one price in our sources is a ¥500 castle admission from a July 2025 listing, so confirm it with the official site. Rail fares, bus fares and pass coverage are not in our sources. Check the JR West fare pages and the bus operator instead. The Tomonoura bus is probably outside rail passes, so verify that before you board. For national passes and planning, start with our Japan Travel Guide: Plan Your Trip with Expert Tips & Itineraries. Coin lockers at Fukuyama Station would simplify the day, but confirm them first.
Stay overnight or go home?
Most travelers do this as a day trip, since Hiroshima City is 103 km away and Okayama City is 58 km away. Overnighting only makes sense if you want evening time in Tomonoura. If the Miyajima side of the region appeals more, compare it with the JR Ferry to Miyajima: Fare, Timetable and Pass Guide. Check current accommodation prices on booking sites in yen.
Basing yourself in Okayama leaves Fukuyama just 58 km away, while Hiroshima City stays 103 km off.
Mistakes to avoid

Missing the last bus back from Tomonoura is the biggest risk, so look up the final departure at the bus stop. Do not expect Hiroshima-style English signage. Do not arrive on a closing day. Rose-season visitors should check Fukuyama Rose Festival dates, which have run annually since 1971 but were not confirmed for 2026. Pokémon fans passing through Hiroshima may prefer the Pokémon Center Hiroshima guide for a different kind of stop.
Should you base yourself in Fukuyama or elsewhere?
Choose Fukuyama as a practical stopover rather than the region’s default base. It is 103 km from Hiroshima City and 58 km from Okayama City, according to Fukuyama’s city overview. That positioning makes it useful when your rail journey already follows the Sanyo corridor.
Stay in Hiroshima City if Hiroshima’s memorial sites and Miyajima are your priorities. With only 1 day in the region, Fukuyama should not replace those headline destinations. Stay in Fukuyama only if Tomonoura’s harbor atmosphere matters more than city sightseeing.
Onomichi suits travelers focused on its hillside streets or the Shimanami Kaido. Fukuyama suits visitors who want a castle beside the station and a separate old port town. Okayama is the simpler choice for Kurashiki and western Honshu connections. Treat Fukuyama as a focused half-day or full-day addition, then continue by train.
