JR West runs a short crossing between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima island. Snippets from search results put the ride at about 10 minutes. Check the JR West Miyajima Ferry site for the current schedule. One dated snippet from January 2025 lists a one-way fare of ¥200, excluding visitor tax. Another from September 2025 describes departures about every 15 minutes, from roughly 6:25 am to 22:42 from Miyajimaguchi. Treat all of these as starting points, not promises. Busy days and temporary timetables change the pattern, and no official page we reviewed confirms the current fare.

JR Ferry vs Matsudai Ferry: Which Boat Fits You

Two companies cross to Miyajima: JR West and Matsudai Kisen. The same dated snippet gives both a ¥200 one-way fare and a similar crossing time. So price and speed rarely decide it. Your rail pass, the pier you prefer and the view you want matter more. We could not verify pier locations or walking distances, so check both operators' official maps before you leave Miyajimaguchi. Matsudai Kisen publishes its own fares and timetable.

Fares, Rail Passes and IC Cards

Pass holders benefit most. The operator states that you can use your Japan Rail Pass and JR-West Rail Pass on its boats. Our Japan travel planning guide covers rail pass context for the wider trip. Without a pass, you pay the fare plus any visitor tax. A January 2025 snippet lists ¥200 one way, excluding that tax, but the tax amount is not in our sources. Look it up on the official fares page before you budget. Payment by IC card is accepted on the JR boat. Which cards work, including Suica, is not stated in our sources, so confirm before relying on one. Keep a little cash as a backup. Do not assume a pass covers Matsudai Kisen. Ask at its counter.

Miyajima Ferry Timetable and Last Boat

Do not plan around a fixed gap between boats. The operator publishes monthly calendars for November 2026 through October 2027. Each date follows one of four patterns: regular, temporary, busy day, or New Year holiday. A September 2025 snippet reports departures about every 15 minutes, with the first at roughly 6:25 am and the last from Miyajimaguchi at 22:42. That figure is dated, and it covers the departure from the mainland side. The last boat back from Miyajima is not in our sources. Read it off the official calendar for your date, and note it before you step off. If you miss it, check the other operator's timetable and the staffed counter at the pier for the next option. Open the calendar the evening before and again on the morning you travel.

The Great Torii Cruise: Hours, Tide and Who It Suits

JR West advertises Great Torii ferry services that run from Miyajimaguchi from 9:10 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. The operator says these take passengers closest to the Great Torii from the sea. It also says you can frame Itsukushima Shrine through the torii in one photo. Photographers get the most from this route. Whether it carries a separate fare, and which side of the boat gives the best view, are not stated in our sources. Ask staff or check the official page before boarding. Tide affects the Great Torii's surroundings, so check the day's tide times and the operator's notice. Our sources do not explain how tide changes the sightseeing service, so do not count on a fixed experience.

Tip

Great Torii sailings from Miyajimaguchi run from 9:10 a.m. to 4:10 p.m., so build that window into any plan centred on the torii.

How to Reach Miyajimaguchi from Hiroshima and Osaka

Miyajimaguchi is the mainland departure point for the crossing. From Hiroshima, you reach it by rail or tram. Verify the line, platform and travel time on a current timetable. For the full route, read our Hiroshima attractions guide. Coming from Osaka, you can combine the trip into one long day. Our Osaka to Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip covers the transfer. Leave a buffer between your train and the boat. A late arrival costs more if you are on a busy-day timetable.

Good to know

With a crossing of about 10 minutes, most of your buffer should cover waiting for a departure rather than the ride itself.

Planning Your Miyajima Time Around the Boats

Decide how long you want on the island before you pick a boat. A half day suits a shrine visit and a few snacks. A full day gives room for walking and a slower lunch. Either way, write down the last departure from Miyajima first. Then plan backward. Our Hiroshima and Miyajima one-day itinerary lays out a full schedule. If you arrive during a festival weekend, expect heavier queues. Our oyster festival budget guide covers crowd and cost notes. Families and travelers with luggage should check the operator's rules on baggage, strollers and wheelchair access. Our sources do not cover them. Pets are allowed on deck only, on a leash or in a cage, per the operator.

Mistakes to Avoid on the Miyajima Ferry

Most problems come from assumptions about the timetable or the pass. Use this checklist before you leave.

  • Assuming boats leave every 15 minutes. Busy-day and temporary timetables exist.
  • Missing the last boat. Check the official calendar for the last departure from Miyajima.
  • Boarding the wrong operator with a rail pass. The JR boat accepts the Japan Rail Pass and JR-West Rail Pass, per the operator.
  • Treating a dated fare as current. Verify the amount and visitor tax.
  • Carrying luggage across the island. Confirm the operator's rules and plan storage near the pier.
