Last updated October 2026: Higashiyama Zoo Nagoya combines a zoo, a botanical garden, amusement rides and the Higashiyama Sky Tower on one site in Chikusa Ward. The nearest subway stop is Higashiyama-Koen Station, a 3-minute walk from the zoo gate. Use this guide to decide how long to stay, what to cut, and how it fits beside the other stops in our Nagoya attractions guide.

Higashiyama Zoo at a Glance

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens opened in 1937 and covers roughly 60 hectares. That is too much ground for a rushed stop, and one competing guide says a single day is not enough to cover everything. Plan your visit around a few anchors instead of trying to see all of it.

  • Nearest station: Higashiyama-Koen on the Higashiyama Line, about a 3-minute walk.
  • Second station: Hoshigaoka, about a 6-minute walk.
  • Hours: 9:00 to 16:50, with last entry at 16:30.
  • Closed: Mondays, or the next weekday when Monday is a national holiday, plus 29 December to 1 January.
  • Children in junior high and younger: free, according to two recent visitor guides.
  • Adult admission: sources disagree, so confirm it on the official visitor information page before you go.

Is Higashiyama Zoo Worth It? Who It Suits and Who Can Skip

Families with small children get the most from the site. The grounds are wide, there are rides, and a children's zoo lets kids meet small animals. Visitor reviews dated September 2026 describe many local families and school groups, which suggests a relaxed pace rather than a tourist crush.

Plant fans and autumn-foliage hunters should treat the botanical garden as the main event. Visitor sources describe cherry blossom in spring, sunflowers in summer and strong foliage in autumn. Since you are reading this in late October, foliage season is the practical draw right now. Do not rely on exact bloom dates, because they shift year to year.

Couples can add the Sky Tower for a panoramic view from 134 meters. One source calls it a popular night-view spot.

Short-stay travelers with a packed castle-and-food itinerary can reasonably skip it. Two hours here costs you a half-day slot elsewhere in Nagoya. If animals and gardens are not on your list, spend that time in the city instead.

How to Get to Higashiyama Zoo from Nagoya Station

Take the Higashiyama Line from Nagoya Station to Higashiyama-Koen Station. The ride is direct. One hotel guide says about 20 minutes, and an older 2019 blog put it near 17 to 18 minutes. Treat both as estimates and check the current fare with the city subway bureau.

From Higashiyama-Koen, the zoo gate is about 3 minutes on foot. Hoshigaoka Station is the alternative, at about 6 minutes on foot. Pick the entrance by what you want first, then plan your loop from there. Verify on the park map which gate sits closest to the garden or the Sky Tower, because the grounds are hilly and large.

A Nagoya subway day pass may earn admission discounts, according to one hotel guide. Confirm which pass and which facilities it covers before buying.

Arriving by intercity coach? Our Meitetsu Bus Center guide covers the terminal. You would then transfer to the subway.

Driving is possible, but a 2019 blog listed five car parks with around 1,600 spaces and a fee of 800 JPY. Those figures are likely stale. Check the official site before you rely on them.

Tickets, Hours and Closed Days

Gates open at 9:00 and close at 16:50. Last entry is 16:30, so arriving at 16:00 leaves you very little time. One older blog gave 16:45 as the closing time, so go by the official page.

Mondays are closed. If Monday is a national or substitute holiday, the closure moves to the following weekday. The park also shuts from 29 December to 1 January.

Adult admission is where sources conflict. A hotel guide and a September 2026 visitor review say 500 JPY. A directory page updated on 1 October 2026 says 800 JPY. We cannot settle that here, so check the official site on the day you plan to go. Either way, the price is low next to what many Nagoya attractions charge, and children in junior high or younger enter free.

The Sky Tower and the garden may have separate or combined tickets. Prices for those combinations differ between sources, so confirm them at the gate or online.

Carry some cash. One source lists accepted cards, while another says some facilities take cash only. Do not assume every food stall or ride accepts a card.

What Not to Miss in the Zoo

Shabani the western gorilla became widely known online in 2015. Many visitors head straight for him, so go early or accept a short wait. Check current resident animals on the official site, since collections change.

Koalas are described as a symbol of the zoo. Expect them to be a popular stop with children.

Zozium is the Asian elephant house. It is built in the image of Sri Lanka and includes a learning exhibit on elephants and their habitat.

The Medaka Museum is a specialist exhibit on medaka fish. It suits older kids and curious adults who want a quiet break from the crowds.

A red panda house opened in 2021. Add it to your route if small mammals are the priority.

A regeneration plan is underway, with new areas such as an Asian tropical rainforest zone described as scheduled to open. Some areas may be closed or newly open, so check the official site before building your route around any one exhibit.

The Botanical Garden and Sky Tower

The botanical garden holds over 7,000 plant species, according to a hotel guide. It uses the natural terrain, so expect slopes. Spring brings cherry blossom, summer brings sunflowers, and autumn brings foliage. Late October is within the foliage window, but verify current conditions before you commit.

Good to know

Plant fans get the most from the garden, which holds over 7,000 plant species, so budget extra time for the slopes.

The greenhouse front building is designated a national important cultural property and reopened in 2021. Inside, plants from tropical and subtropical climates are on display. It makes a good indoor stop on a cold or wet day.

Older accounts mention relocated gassho-zukuri houses and a World Ricefish House. Confirm both are open before planning around them.

The Higashiyama Sky Tower rises 134 meters. It has a restaurant and café, and the view is the reason to go. Save it for the end of a long day if your legs allow, or for a clear afternoon. Check its current hours on the official site, since they may differ from the zoo gates.

How to Plan Your Day at Higashiyama Zoo

Match the route to your time. All timings below are our rough estimates, not official figures.

Tip

Last entry is 16:30, so an arrival near 9:00 leaves room for a 2 to 3 hour highlights route.

With small children, use the park's stroller and wheelchair rental, which one hotel guide mentions. Confirm availability at the gate. Restrooms are reported as frequent across the grounds, and food courts and restaurants sit inside the park. Families planning an overnight base can read our family hotel picks in Nagoya.

Weekdays are reportedly quieter. Arrive near 9:00 to see animals at their most active, which is general advice rather than an official claim.

Mistakes to Avoid at Higashiyama Zoo

Most frustrations come from timing and assumptions. A few quick checks prevent them.

  • Arriving on a Monday, when the park is closed.
  • Showing up after 16:30, the last entry time.
  • Assuming every stall and ride takes cards.
  • Trying to cover the zoo, garden, rides and tower in two hours.
  • Quoting an old blog's admission, parking or feeding-event details without checking the official site.

Where to Stay and What to Pair It With

The Higashiyama Line gives you a direct run to the zoo, so a base near that line saves transfers. Our guide to areas to stay in Nagoya compares neighborhoods. For a wider range of rooms, see our Nagoya hotel list.

Pair the zoo with an indoor stop in the same city if rain is forecast. Baseball fans can look at Chunichi Dragons ticket advice for an evening plan. Building a longer route? Our Japan Travel Guide: Plan Your Trip with Expert Tips & Itineraries covers the wider trip.
