Last updated October 2026. Matsumoto Station is the main rail hub for Nagano's castle town and the usual jumping-off point for the Northern Alps. This guide explains the two exits, the separate bus terminal, locker prices and the connections to Kamikochi, Azumino and the museums nearby.

Matsumoto Station at a Glance

Matsumoto Station sits on the JR network and also hosts the Alpico Railway's Kamikochi Line. Brief planning notes name three services travelers meet most often: the Limited Express Azusa, the Limited Express Shinano and the Alpico Kamikochi Line. Matsumoto lies between Tokyo, Nagoya and Kanazawa, according to the city's own tourism site.

Most visitors arrive for the castle, then continue to the mountains. Treat the station as a base camp rather than a simple stop. Plan which exit you need before you leave the platform, because the two sides of the building serve very different purposes. For wider sightseeing ideas, start with our Matsumoto attractions guide.

  • Castle (East) Exit: downtown, Matsumoto Castle, main hotel district.
  • Alps (West) Exit: Alpico Railway and Kamikochi Line access.
  • Kamikochi Line: Platform 7, which feels like a station within a station.
  • Matsumoto Bus Terminal: a separate building, not inside the JR station.

Matsumoto Station Layout: East Exit, West Exit and Concourse

Matsumoto Station has a Castle (East) Exit and an Alps (West) Exit. East is the urban, tourist side. It leads toward downtown, Matsumoto Castle and the main hotel district. West is quieter and more residential, and it gives you views toward the mountain range.

A 2nd-floor concourse works as the central spine. It connects the tracks, the ticket gates and the information center. If you are lost, climb to this level and orient yourself from there. Station facades echo the black-and-white look of the castle, which helps you confirm you have arrived in the right town.

The Kamikochi Line uses Platform 7. Allow a few extra minutes for that transfer, because it feels like a separate station. Official visitor details are on the Matsumoto visitor information site. Check it for current station services before you travel.

Getting to Matsumoto Station by Train, Bus or Air

Trains are the simplest option for most visitors. Limited Express Azusa runs from Shinjuku in Tokyo. Limited Express Shinano comes in from Nagoya and is the scenic choice. Local and rapid trains also link Matsumoto with Nagano City, where the Wide View Shinano is a useful option.

Good to know

The Shinjuku highway bus takes 190 minutes, but it departs from Alpico Plaza across from the East Exit, not inside the JR station.

Highway buses trade speed for price. From Shinjuku, the bus takes 190 minutes and costs ¥3,500. From Nagoya, it takes 205 minutes for ¥3,560. Rail timetables and fares change, so confirm them with JR East before you book.

By air, Shinshu Matsumoto Airport has flights from Osaka, Kobe, Fukuoka and Sapporo, according to Welcome-Matsumoto. An airport shuttle runs to JR Matsumoto Station. Its info line, 0263-32-2814, lists service from 8:00 to 17:45, closed December 29 to January 3.

Matsumoto Bus Terminal: A Separate Building

Many travelers assume highway buses leave from the JR station. They do not. Matsumoto Bus Terminal sits in the Alpico Plaza building across from the East Exit. Walk out of the station, cross over and look for the Alpico signage.

Highway fares from Matsumoto Bus Terminal are listed by Go! Nagano. Operators include Alpico Bus and partner companies. Local sightseeing buses to places like Matsumoto Castle, Asama Onsen and the Matsumoto City Museum of Art also use this hub. The Town Sneaker North Course runs from Matsumoto Station to the castle.

Coin Lockers and Luggage Storage at Matsumoto Station

Coin lockers are available on four levels. You will find them on the East Exit 1st floor, the 2nd-floor passageway, the 3rd-floor waiting room and the West Exit 1st floor. Each location lists the same three sizes and prices, per Go! Nagano.

Small lockers cost ¥300, medium ¥500 and large ¥600. A large unit measures H875 by W345 by D645 mm, so it suits most suitcases but not oversized gear. If lockers are full, ask your hotel to hold bags. Department stores near the station may also help, but confirm current policies on site.

Getting Around Matsumoto From the Station

Matsumoto is compact. Welcome-Matsumoto describes a castle town where most places are reachable on foot. Walking from the station to Matsumoto Castle takes about 15 to 20 minutes. A bus takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes.

The Town Sneaker sightseeing bus has North, South, East and Town courses, according to our brief notes. Pick the North Course for the castle. Rental bicycles are also an option near the station, often called Sui-Sui Town, but check current availability and rates locally.

If your stay is short, walk one way and ride back. That plan keeps your afternoon flexible without a fixed timetable.

Regional Connections From Matsumoto Station

Kamikochi is reached by taking the Alpico Railway from the West side to Shin-Shimashima Station, then a bus. Do not miss the last train or bus back, and check seasonal timetables before you go.

For a gentler outing, read our Azumino day trip plan. It uses the local JR line out of Matsumoto.

Art lovers can combine train and a short walk to reach the museum. Our Japan Ukiyo-e Museum guide covers the route, and the museum's official access page lists directions.

Onsen fans can head toward the mountains. Our Shirahone Onsen guide explains the trip, and the Shirahone Onsen site gives local information.

Eating and Shopping at the Station

Matsumoto is known for soba, apples, rice, miso and wasabi, according to Welcome-Matsumoto. Eki-soba stands offer a fast standing meal on the platforms. Midori shopping mall carries local specialties such as oyaki dumplings and sanzoku-yaki, a mountain-style chicken dish.

Shinshu wine and sake make good gifts. Shiojiri Wine comes from the nearby town of Shiojiri. Wasabi snacks travel well and make an easy buy for the ride home.

What to Do With a 45-Minute Layover

A short wait works well if you plan it. Store your bag in a locker for ¥300 to ¥600. Grab oyaki or a bowl of soba from the station area. Then walk out the West Exit for a look toward the Alps.

Tip

Walking from the station to Matsumoto Castle takes 15 to 20 minutes, so a castle detour would consume most of a 45-minute layover.

If you want a bigger stop, leave your luggage and head to the East Exit instead. Do not stray far if your connection is on Platform 7, since that platform needs transfer time.

Where to Stay Near Matsumoto Station

Business hotels cluster near the East Exit, which is convenient for early trains and buses. Families may want more space and facilities. Compare options in our Matsumoto hotels roundup. Our family hotel picks cover roomier stays.

Common Mistakes at Matsumoto Station

Three errors catch visitors out. First, people confuse the JR ticket office with the Alpico bus ticket office. Second, travelers miss the last train or bus to Kamikochi. Third, rail pass holders forget to validate the pass before arrival.

A fourth error is heading for the wrong building. Highway buses depart from Matsumoto Bus Terminal in the Alpico Plaza building, not from inside the JR station. Allow extra minutes if you carry bags.

  • Check which ticket office you need before you queue.
  • Confirm the last Kamikochi departure the day before.
  • Validate rail passes before you reach the gates.
  • Walk to Alpico Plaza for highway buses.
