Last updated November 2026: the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park Nagoya is JR Central's railway museum, which opened on 14 March 2011. Train fans and families with young kids get the most from it. Everyone else should read the skip-it advice below before committing a half day.
Is the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park Nagoya Worth Visiting?

Go if you love trains, travel with children, or need an indoor plan for a rainy Nagoya day. Skip it if none of those apply. Access takes one line: ride the Aonami Line from Nagoya Station to Kinjofuto Station, about 25 minutes, with trains roughly every 15 minutes. JR Central's official museum page lists 39 rolling stock displays, covering maglev and conventional trains. Visitors with no interest in trains and no children will likely be bored. Browse other things to do in Nagoya instead. The time estimates below are our editorial judgement, not official figures.
Casual visitors face 39 rolling stock displays in about 90 minutes, so picking highlights beats trying to see everything.
| Visitor type | Verdict | Time (editorial estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Train fan | Worth a long visit | 3 to 4 hours |
| Family with young kids | Worth it, especially the kids' area | 2 to 3 hours |
| Casual tourist | Optional, pick the highlights | About 90 minutes |
| Rainy-day visitor | Solid indoor option | About 2 hours |

How to Get to the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park from Nagoya Station
From Nagoya Station, follow the signs for the Aonami Line and ride to the terminus, Kinjofuto Station. The ride takes about 25 minutes, and sources differ by a minute. Trains leave roughly every 15 minutes. The Aonami Line is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, so plan a separate fare. Fare reports differ between sources, so check the current amount at the station or on the Aonami Line's own site. Coming from elsewhere, one third-party guide gives shinkansen times to Nagoya Station of about 2 hours from Tokyo, 50 minutes from Osaka and 40 minutes from Kyoto. Verify those before booking, and see our Japan Travel Guide: Plan Your Trip with Expert Tips & Itineraries for wider rail planning. The museum is a few steps from Kinjofuto Station. After the turnstiles, museum signs point left and Legoland Japan signs point right. Descend the steps, pass the convenience store, walk under the tracks and cross at the pedestrian crosswalk. The entrance is then on your right, according to one visitor guide.

Hours, Tickets and Costs
Published hours are 10:00 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and from 28 December to 1 January. Sources word the rule for Tuesday national holidays differently, so confirm it on the official JR Central site before you go. Admission figures also conflict between competitor pages. No adult price is quoted here for that reason. Use this formula for your budget, and fill each part in from official sources. Tickets are sold at machines inside the entrance, per one visitor guide.

- Admission: check the official site for the current adult and child rates
- Aonami Line round trip: check the current fare, not covered by the Japan Rail Pass
- Optional simulators: confirm which are paid on arrival
What to See and What to Prioritize

The main hall holds the MLX01 SCMaglev car and a line-up of 0, 100, 300, 700 and N700 series shinkansen cars. Steam and electric locomotives stand further back, so walk behind the front row. A large diorama recreates Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka with running miniature trains. A free English audio guide is reportedly available to rent, so ask at the counter. With only 90 minutes, here is our suggested order.
- Head to the simulators first and sort out access
- See the MLX01 and the shinkansen line-up
- Walk the locomotives and older rolling stock
- Finish at the Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka diorama

Simulators and the Kids' Area
Simulators are the most popular draw, and reports on how they work disagree. One guide lists extra fees for them. Another describes a drawing for the shinkansen and conductor simulators. It also describes tickets at the entrance for the regular driver simulator and first-come access for the maglev simulator. Rules may have changed, so read the signs and the brochure on arrival. Go early rather than leaving them for the end. Wait times are not documented, so do not count on a quick turn. Upstairs, the second-floor kids' area is reportedly free, with shoes off. Families with children of different ages can split up here, one group on the simulators and one upstairs.
With last entry at 17:00, a late arrival leaves little slack for the simulators, which are the most popular draw.

Combine with Legoland or Other Nagoya Sights
Legoland Japan shares Kinjofuto Station with the museum. One guide suggests splitting a family, with younger kids and one parent at Legoland and older kids at the museum. Check Legoland's own site for prices and hours, as none are quoted here. For a different day, try Ghibli Park from Nagoya. For an evening in the centre, Oasis 21 is an easy add-on after you return to Nagoya Station. Match-day visitors can also see our Grampus match guide.

| Plan | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Museum only | Train fans, rainy days | Short trip, easy to fit around Nagoya Station |
| Museum + Legoland | Families with mixed ages | Long day, so check both opening hours first |
| Different Nagoya plan | Visitors with no train interest | Skips the maglev and shinkansen exhibits |
Where to Eat Near the Museum
A small snack counter operates inside the museum, and a convenience store sits on the walk from the station. For proper meals, return to Kinjofuto Station and follow signs toward Legoland Japan. A restaurant arcade stands just outside the Legoland entrance, with Japanese and international options. Opening times vary, so check before you plan a sit-down lunch.

Where to Stay
The museum does not need its own hotel. Nagoya Station and Sakae are the practical bases, and both connect to the Aonami Line trip via Nagoya Station. Compare neighbourhoods in our guide to the best areas to stay. Families should read our picks of family hotels in Nagoya. A base near Nagoya Station also keeps the roughly 25-minute ride simple.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most problems come from timing and transport assumptions. Check these before you leave.
- Arriving on a Tuesday, when the museum is closed
- Assuming the Japan Rail Pass covers the Aonami Line
- Arriving after 17:00, the last entry time
- Leaving the simulators until the end of the visit
- Skipping the official site check for prices and holiday closures
