Last updated October 2026: JR Sapporo Station is where most Hokkaido trips start, and it is bigger than it looks on a map. This guide covers the layout, subway transfers, the weatherproof underground walkway, JR Tower T38, the malls, food and train times. Use it to plan your first hour in the station and your day around it.

JR Sapporo Station sits at the center of a connected complex. Malls, a hotel, an observatory and subway stations all link to it. Most visitors lose time here because the station is a network, not a single building.

Good to know

Budget 20+ minutes for platform transfers; hotels within 5 minutes of the station eliminate wasted time with luggage.

Start with the concourse. Stellar Place, JR Tower and Daimaru sit around the JR gates. Apia is an underground mall that runs between Sapporo Subway Station and the JR station. It gives you a sheltered route between the two.

Two subway lines matter for most visitors. Namboku Line is the one most travelers need for Odori and Susukino. Toho Line links to the Paseo shopping street, which reaches the JR gates directly. A Tozai line also runs through Sapporo, but you reach it at Odori rather than at the JR station.

Budget 20+ minutes to walk from the JR platforms to the subway platforms, especially with luggage. Add more time at rush hour or when you are carrying a suitcase through crowded corridors. Do not book a tight subway transfer straight after a JR arrival.

A good first move is to pick one landmark and navigate to it. Use the Daimaru store for the south side and Stellar Place for the east side. Then follow the signs for your exit rather than guessing.

  • Stellar Place: shopping and dining directly connected to the station, with Sapporo Cinema Frontier on 7F.
  • Daimaru Sapporo: department store from basement level 1 up to 8F.
  • Apia: underground mall of over 100 stores between the subway and JR stations.
  • Paseo: shopping street east and west of the ticket gates, linked to the Toho Line.

Chi-Ka-Ho tunnel: walking to Odori and Susukino in winter

Hokkaido winters make sidewalks slow and cold. The underground pedestrian route lets you skip the weather entirely. You can walk from JR Sapporo Station to Odori and on to Susukino without going outside.

The route has two sections. Aurora Town runs from Sapporo to Odori. It has art displays and resting lounges for tired commuters. Pole Town continues from Odori to Susukino.

It works on rainy days too. The tunnels are heated, so they stay comfortable in cold weather. Plan to use them for dinner in Susukino or a stroll toward Odori Park.

If you are staying near the station, this walkway is your main winter tool. For ideas on what to see once you arrive, read our Sapporo attractions guide. For a day out from the station, you can plan a trip to Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo. Check official zoo visitor information for current hours before you go.

JR Tower T38 observatory: Sapporo's best view

JR Tower is the tallest building in Hokkaido. Its T38 observatory sits on the 38th floor. Sources differ on height. One lists the deck at 160 meters, while another gives 173 meters for the building. Treat 160 meters as the observation deck figure.

You get a 360-degree view of the city. On clear days you can see as far as Ishikari Bay and Mount Yubari. Sapporo has been described as one of Japan's "New Top 3 Night Views," so evening is a strong choice.

Go near sunset to see both daylight and city lights. Hours listed on a travel platform for 2026 are 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with admission ending at 9:30 PM. Confirm these before you go, since schedules can change.

The ticket counter is on 6F of Stellar Place. It also serves as the entrance to the elevator up to the 38th floor. Current adult admission is listed at ¥740. Student tickets are listed at ¥520 and children's at ¥320. An older source from May 2019 listed adults at ¥720, so expect small changes.

Upstairs you will find tea and coffee shops with observation seating. If you want more context for your day, our Sapporo sightseeing pillar shows what else fits around the station.

Shopping at JR Sapporo Station: Daimaru, Stellar Place and Apia

Shopping here is split across several buildings. Each one suits a different goal. Pick by what you want, not by which door you reach first.

Daimaru Sapporo is the one for food and souvenirs. Its basement level, Hoppe Town, collects Hokkaido confectionery brands. You will find LeTAO, Rokkatei, Kitakaro and ROYCE' there. Nearby stalls also sell fresh seafood, produce and pickles. On 8F, a restaurant floor covers soba, sushi, tempura, eel, Italian food and buffets.

Stellar Place suits fashion and dining. It has over 200 stores, including apparel, variety shops, restaurants, cafés and a cinema. Its Star Clock marks the center of the building. Stellar Dining is on 6F.

Apia is the practical stop. It has over 100 stores on the first basement level. You will find drugstores, convenience stores and eateries. A souvenir shop called Omiyage Kobo Natoriya sells treats such as Shiroi Koibito and ROYCE' chocolates, with shipping options.

Dairy products also make good omiyage. Cheese is one example. The Hokkaido-Sapporo Food & Tourism Information Center acts as a one-stop souvenir shop and also hands out information about Sapporo.

Redevelopment matters here. Older guides list Sapporo ESTA and Paseo as open. Our brief indicates both are closed for redevelopment linked to the Shinkansen extension project. Bic Camera was a major ESTA tenant, so check where it now operates before planning an electronics stop.

Where to eat at JR Sapporo Station

Food is a main reason to linger. Plan one sit-down meal and one grab-and-go stop.

Kaiten Sushi Hanamaru on Stellar Place 6F is packed most of the day. Lines are long. Use the Hanamaru hack: take a waiting ticket first, then shop in Stellar Place until your number nears. Keep your phone on you and check back at intervals.

Sapporo Ramen Republic was inside ESTA. As of May 2019 it listed eight shops. That included one each from Asahikawa, Hakodate and Otaru, and four from Sapporo. Because ESTA is reported closed, check current status before you plan a ramen tour around it.

For trains, buy a lunch box before boarding. The Daimaru basement is a sensible place to look. It also sells Hokkaido sweets if you want a dessert for the ride.

On a cold night, use the underground route to reach Susukino for dinner. You avoid the snow and still reach the city's main nightlife district.

Transit from JR Sapporo Station: airport and regional trains

Almost every JR Hokkaido line runs through Sapporo Station. That makes it the best base for day trips and long rides. Always confirm the exact train name and platform on the day.

Tip

Asahikawa is 1.5 hours away by train; factor in time for platform access and departure buffers when planning regional day trips.

For New Chitose Airport, take the Rapid Airport train. The ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Trains run frequently, so you can usually arrive without a reservation, but check current timetables.

Asahikawa is about 1.5 hours away. Older guides name the Super Ozora for this route. Our brief flags that the service name may have changed, so verify the current train name before you buy. Hakodate is about 3.5 hours away. Older guides name the Super Hokuto, which also needs checking.

Otaru is a common day trip too. We have no verified travel time or fare for it, so check a current timetable. Ticket prices for these routes vary by train and seat, so confirm them at a JR Hokkaido ticket office.

Where to stay near JR Sapporo Station

Staying next to the station saves time with luggage. It also gives you the underground walkway on your doorstep.

JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo is the direct-access option. It occupies the 1st floor and floors 22 to 36 of the JR Tower East Building. All 342 rooms are listed with views of Sapporo's nightscape. A natural hot spring sits on 22F. The restaurant Mikuni Sapporo is also on site.

For mid-range and business stays, look for hotels within a 5-minute walk of the station. Compare neighborhoods in our guide to the 10 Best Areas and Tips for Staying in Sapporo (2026). Essential tips and mistakes to avoid at the station

Most problems here come from timing and luggage. These fixes help.

Coin lockers fill up at busy times. Our sources do not list exact locker locations. Look for lockers in several corners of the complex rather than queueing at the first bank. If every locker is full, try another floor or building.

If you hold a rail pass, exchange it early. We have no verified office location or hours here. Check the JR Hokkaido information for current details and allow time before your first train.

Do not squeeze subway transfers. Allow 20+ minutes between JR platforms and subway platforms. Add time with bags.

Use Paseo or Apia to shelter while you transfer, but verify which areas are open. Redevelopment may change corridors.

Plan your side trips around the subway. Fans of shrines can explore the Sapporo Fushimi Inari Shrine page. Check the shrine's official visitor information for details. For a wider Japan plan, our Japan travel planning guide gives context.

Which exit should you use at JR Sapporo Station?

Choose your exit before leaving the JR gates. It can save a long walk through the complex, especially with luggage. The South Exit is the practical choice for most first-time visitors. It faces the main commercial side of the station, including Daimaru Sapporo, JR Tower, Stellar Place and the underground route toward Odori.

Use the South Exit for central Sapporo hotels, the Namboku and Toho subway lines, and sheltered access to Aurora Town. Follow signs for the underground passage if snow, rain or wind makes street-level walking unpleasant.

The North Exit is quieter and is best for Hokkaido University. The university's main gate is a short walk northwest of the station. This side is also useful for hotels and offices north of the tracks.

Do not assume an exit on your map is close to your platform. Check the overhead signs before passing through the ticket gates. If you are meeting someone, agree on “JR Sapporo Station South Exit” or “North Exit,” rather than simply saying Sapporo Station.
