What and Where Is Tenjin?
Go Fukuoka, the city's official tourism site, calls Tenjin, in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka's "food and shopping heart": department stores and malls, with shrines and small side streets in between. Daimyo, Imaizumi and Kego add cafés, boutiques and small restaurants.
Tenjin is west of Hakata Station, and the two are 5 minutes apart on the Kuko Line. Nakasu-Kawabata, the stop for the Nakasu nightlife district, is the next station east. Our Fukuoka neighborhoods guide compares Tenjin with the other districts.
Things to Do in Tenjin
Shopping and Tenjin Chikagai. The Tenjin Underground Mall opened in September 1976 and runs 590 m north to south, designed like a 19th-century European street. Shops open 10:00–20:00 and restaurants 10:00–21:00 (some differ). Department stores stand above it; our Tenjin shopping and underground mall guide covers them.
ACROS Fukuoka step garden. Terraces planted from the 2nd to the 14th floor continue the greenery of Tenjin Central Park up the building. Entry is free, 9:00–18:00 (March–October) or 9:00–17:00 (November–February); the rooftop deck opens only on weekends and holidays, 10:00–16:00. It is closed December 31–January 2 and in rain. See our ACROS Fukuoka step garden guide.
Kego Shrine and Kego Park. Kego Shrine has stood in central Tenjin for more than 400 years; its gates are open 6:00–18:00. The adjoining Kego Park, directly behind Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, is a place to rest between shops and has illuminations at Christmas.
Yatai and the nightlife edge. More than 100 yatai (open-air food stalls) open around the city each evening, including in Tenjin. For more choice, go one stop east to the Nakasu yatai and Nakasu's bars. Our guide to visiting Fukuoka yatai explains how they work.

The Tenjin Big Bang Redevelopment
Expect construction in parts of Tenjin. The Tenjin Big Bang is a Fukuoka City project to replace aging buildings with earthquake-resistant ones across about 80 hectares within roughly 500 m of the Tenjin intersection, adding plazas and underground walkways as it goes. Projects include Tenjin Business Center and ONE FUKUOKA BLDG. Source: Fukuoka City, Tenjin Big Bang.
