Last updated October 2026: the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass gives you 5 consecutive days of JR rail travel between the Kansai region and Hiroshima. It covers Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen trains on the Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima run, which the national JR Pass restricts. Use this guide to match the pass to your route, then decide whether point-to-point tickets are cheaper.

What the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is

This is a rail pass for foreign tourists. It gives 5 consecutive days of unlimited travel on designated JR West lines. Check the official JR West pass page for the current price and the definitive area map.

Your days run back to back from the start date you choose. You cannot pause the pass on a rest day. A day in Kyoto without a train ride still uses up one of your 5 days.

Treat it as a regional pass built for one corridor. That corridor is the Sanyo Shinkansen between Osaka and Hiroshima, plus the local JR lines at each end.

Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass coverage and key destinations

Coverage centers on the Sanyo Shinkansen line. Your main stops on this route are Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Okayama, and Hiroshima. Local JR lines connect these cities to smaller stops.

Two details set this pass apart. Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen trains are allowed between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. These are the fastest services on the line. The Hello Kitty Shinkansen on the Sanyo line is also covered.

Use the lists below to sort what the pass includes from what it does not.

  • Included: Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, including Nozomi and Mizuho
  • Included: Hello Kitty Shinkansen on the Sanyo line
  • Included: designated JR West lines around Kansai and Hiroshima
  • Included: JR Miyajima Ferry in Hiroshima
  • Included: Maple-oop sightseeing loop bus in Hiroshima
  • Not included: Hiroshima Streetcar
  • Not included: Astram Line
  • Not included: the private Matsudai ferry to Miyajima

Is the pass worth it? Cost-benefit for the Osaka-Hiroshima corridor

Value depends on how many long rides you take within the 5 days. Your baseline is one round trip by Shinkansen between Osaka and Hiroshima. Add every other ride you plan and compare the total with the pass price.

Our sources give no fare figure, so look up the current pass price on the JR West page. Then price each leg in a timetable tool such as HyperDia or Jorudan. Fares changed notably in late 2023, so ignore older blog numbers.

A simple rule applies. If the Osaka-Hiroshima round trip alone nearly matches the pass price, any extra Kyoto, Himeji, or Okayama ride tips the math toward the pass. If you only make that one round trip, point-to-point tickets may win.

Use the table below to build your own comparison.

How to buy and activate your Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass

Buy before you fly. Competitor terms state that this kind of JR pass can only be purchased outside Japan. Orders can be made up to 90 days ahead, and you must exchange your voucher within that window.

In Japan, take your passport to a JR office to exchange the voucher. These offices sit at airports and main stations. When you exchange, you pick your start date. According to the reseller terms we reviewed, that date must fall within 30 days of the exchange, and it cannot be changed afterward.

Terms can shift, so confirm them on the JR West page before you pay. Start your wider planning with our Japan Travel Guide: Plan Your Trip with Expert Tips & Itineraries.

Child rules from the same terms: children under 6 travel free with a pass holder. Children aged 6 to 11 need a child pass. From age 12, an adult pass applies.

The pass is strictly personal. Carry your passport, because station staff may check it.

Using the pass in Hiroshima

Hiroshima is where the pass keeps paying back after the long ride. Local JR lines and two useful extras are included. Plan your city days around them.

The JR Miyajima Ferry is covered. Only the JR boat counts, so board the right one. The private Matsudai ferry charges separately.

The Maple-oop loop bus is also included. It reaches the Hiroshima Museum of Art and the Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine. Check opening details on the museum's official site before you go.

For a full list of sights, see our Hiroshima attractions guide. For picks beyond the pass routes, read our 2026 Hiroshima list.

Streetcars and the Astram Line are not covered. Budget cash or an IC card for them.

  • JR Miyajima Ferry: included, JR boat only
  • Maple-oop loop bus: included, serves the art museum and Gokoku Shrine area
  • Hiroshima Streetcar: pay separately
  • Astram Line: pay separately

Reserved vs non-reserved seats

Non-reserved seats are free to use with the pass. Just show it at the gate. Outside peak times, most travelers skip reservations.

Tip

Peak-time trains during 07:00 to 09:00 and 18:00 to 20:00 fill quickly. Reserve strategically for these hours to avoid wasting your 6 reserved-seat uses on off-peak runs.

Peak hours are 07:00 to 09:00 and 18:00 to 20:00, plus bank holidays. A reservation is wise then. Competitor terms say that seat reservations at a station booking office cost no extra charge when you show your pass.

This pass limits you to 6 reserved-seat uses. Spend them on the legs where a seat matters most. Those are usually the Hiroshima round trip and any holiday-period ride.

The pass does not work in the automatic gates. Show it to staff at the manned gate instead. Do the same for ferry boarding.

Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass vs other JR passes

Compare it with two alternatives. The Kansai Area Pass stays near Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. It does not suit a trip that continues to Hiroshima.

The national JR Pass covers more of Japan but restricts Nozomi and Mizuho trains. That is the key gap this regional pass fills. For a trip that stays between Osaka and Hiroshima, the regional pass usually fits better.

Pick the national pass only if you also plan long rides beyond this corridor, such as to Tokyo. Price both on the day you buy, since fares and terms change.

Common mistakes to avoid

A few errors cost travelers real money or time. Avoid these.

  • Treating the 5 days as flexible. They are consecutive, with no pause.
  • Assuming the Hiroshima Streetcar or Astram Line is covered. Neither is.
  • Boarding the Matsudai ferry instead of the JR Miyajima Ferry.
  • Waiting too long after buying. Exchange within the 90-day window.
  • Planning to change the start date after exchange. It cannot be changed.
  • Using up the 6 reserved-seat uses early, then facing a sold-out peak train.

Sample 5-day plan with the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass

Start in Kansai and finish with Hiroshima days. Your first long ride falls on day 2, so use day 1 for local JR rides. Pack the Hiroshima days with sights.

For active days there, borrow from our 3-day Hiroshima adventure plan. For day trips from the city, browse outdoor adventures near Hiroshima.

  • Day 1: Activate the pass in Osaka. Ride local JR to Kyoto or Nara.
  • Day 2: Ride a Nozomi or Mizuho from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima. Visit Peace Memorial Park.
  • Day 3: Take the JR Miyajima Ferry to Itsukushima Shrine.
  • Day 4: Use the Maple-oop bus for the art museum and Gokoku Shrine. Stop at Okayama on the way back if time allows.
  • Day 5: Return toward Kansai. Add Himeji or Kobe as a stop.
