Last updated October 2026: Kyoto Kawaramachi Station is the underground Hankyu terminal under Shijo and Kawaramachi streets. It puts you within a short walk of Gion, Ponto-cho and Nishiki Market. This guide covers the exits, the Osaka train, the Keihan transfer and what to do with your bags.

Kyoto Kawaramachi Station at a Glance

Kyoto-Kawaramachi is the western end of nothing and the eastern end of everything useful. It is the northern terminal of the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line. Every train that leaves here heads toward Osaka-Umeda. Trains are maroon, so look for burgundy cars when you board.

Good to know

Line hours run roughly 05:30 to 23:30, but the ticket gate counter opens at 06:00, so early departures may need extra planning.

It is not the same as JR Kyoto Station, where the Shinkansen stops. Travelers mix the two up often. Kawaramachi sits under the Shijo-Kawaramachi crossing, in Kyoto's main shopping and dining district.

  • Operator: Hankyu Railway, Kyoto Main Line
  • Station number: HK-86
  • Layout: island platform serving three underground tracks
  • Opened: June 17, 1963, and renamed Kyoto-Kawaramachi on October 1, 2019
  • Line hours: roughly 05:30 to 23:30 per Discover Kyoto, so check the latest timetable
  • Next stop toward Osaka: Karasuma

Kyoto Kawaramachi Station vs JR Kyoto Station

Pick the station by where you sleep and where you go first. Coming from Osaka-Umeda on the Hankyu line, Kawaramachi drops you in the middle of the downtown core. JR Kyoto Station is the better choice if you arrive by Shinkansen. Both stations work for Arashiyama trips, but your route differs.

Getting to Kawaramachi From Osaka-Umeda

The Limited Express from Osaka-Umeda takes about 43 minutes with no transfers. The fare is roughly ¥410 on Hankyu. Check the ticket machine fare board for the exact amount on your day. Hankyu's minimum fare is ¥170 for adults and ¥90 for children aged 6 to 11, per Discover Kyoto's Hankyu Line page as of July 2026.

If you plan several rides in one day, ask about a Hankyu Tourist Pass. You can buy it at the Hankyu Tourist Information Center inside the station. Compare its price with your planned rides before paying.

Wait for the Limited Express, called Tokkyu, rather than a local train. Local trains stop at far more stations and cost you time. Check the sign on the platform before boarding.

Hours, Staffing and Accessibility

The ticket gate counter opens at 06:00 and runs until the last train, according to the official Hankyu station page. The Central Ticket Gate may be unstaffed from 18:30 to 19:30. Use the station staff intercom if nobody is there.

Barrier-free facilities include elevators, escalators and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Baby chairs and diaper changing tables are also listed. Station layout and boarding positions are on the official station map PDF.

If you buy a paper ticket, follow Hankyu's process. Insert it at the gate, then take it back after you pass through. If the fare is short at exit, use a fare adjustment machine nearby. The gate buzzer is normal, not a problem.

Which Exit to Use and How to Transfer

Exits decide your walking time. Pick before you climb the stairs.

  • Exit 1A: Kamogawa River (about 3 minutes), Ponto-cho (about 4 minutes) and Gion Shirakawa (about 7 minutes)
  • Exit 1B: Hanamikoji Street (about 7 minutes), Kennin-ji and Yasaka Shrine (about 10 minutes each)
  • Exit 9: Nishiki Market (about 3 minutes) and the Teramachi arcade right at the exit
  • Exits 4 and 5: skip them on weekend afternoons if you carry bags, because Shijo-Kawaramachi crowds up

Transfers: Karasuma and Gion-Shijo

Gion-Shijo Station sits on the Keihan line, not Hankyu. You reach it by crossing the Kamo River on foot. Use it if you head to Fushimi Inari from the Keihan side.

Kawaramachi also connects underground to Karasuma Station, one stop away. That underground link keeps you dry on rainy days. Hankyu lists Keihan Electric Railway, Kyoto City Bus, Kyoto Bus and Keihan Bus as transfer options. Bus stops cluster around the station.

Sightseeing Within Walking Distance

Walking times below come from Exit 1A, 1B or 9 as noted. Use them as planning guides, not guarantees.

  • 5 minutes or less: Kamogawa River, where kawadoko riverside dining platforms run from about May to October
  • 4 minutes: Ponto-cho, a narrow stone-paved alley between the Kamogawa River and Kiyamachi Street
  • 3 minutes: Nishiki Market, a shopping street of about 1,300 ft (400 m)
  • 10 minutes: Yasaka Shrine, open 24 hours, and Kennin-ji Temple with its three gardens
  • 7 minutes: Hanamikoji Street in Gion
  • 15 minutes: Yasui Konpiragu Shrine, known for its relationship-cutting and relationship-forming stone
  • 15 minutes: Rokkaku-do Temple, from Exit 9

Planning Longer Days From the Station

Treat the 15-minute ring as one half day. Start at Exit 1B for Yasaka Shrine and Yasui Konpiragu Shrine. Return through Gion Shirakawa and finish with dinner in Ponto-cho.

For wider plans, read our Kyoto attractions guide. It sorts the city's major sights by area. If you want green space on a separate day, see the Kyoto Gyoen National Park Guide: Palace Tours & Best Viewpoints. Arashiyama days pair well with the Okochi Sanso Garden Kyoto: Tickets, Route and Views (2026), which assumes a Katsura change on Hankyu.

Film fans can look at the Toei Kyoto Studio Park Guide: Japan's Real-Life Samurai Film Set for a separate outing. Check the route from your own station before committing.

Rainy Day Route Under Cover

Take Exit 9 and enter the Teramachi arcade right away. Teramachi and Shinkyogoku are covered, so shopping stays comfortable in rain. Nishiki Market is about 3 minutes from Exit 9. Plan a food stop there before heading back.

Tip

Buy sweets at the Takashimaya food hall before boarding, since the Limited Express ride between Osaka-Umeda and Kawaramachi takes about 43 minutes.

Before your train back to Osaka, walk through the Takashimaya food hall in its basement. It connects to the station underground. Buy sweets and packaged food there, then board.

Luggage, Information Desk and Services

Coin lockers at Kawaramachi often fill up. Do not count on finding one at midday. Use the Hankyu Kyoto Tourist Information Center at Karasuma Station instead. It offers temporary storage and hotel luggage delivery.

At Kawaramachi, the Hankyu Tourist Information Center sits west of the central ticket gate. Staff speak English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. You can ask for directions, free maps and event updates. Access is about 1 minute on foot from the main exit gate.

Mistakes to Avoid at Kawaramachi

Four slips cost travelers the most time.

  • Boarding a local train to Osaka instead of the Limited Express
  • Heading to JR Kyoto Station when your hotel sits near Shijo-Kawaramachi
  • Dragging suitcases through Exits 4 and 5 on weekend afternoons
  • Counting on a locker instead of arranging luggage delivery
  • Arriving at the Central Ticket Gate between 18:30 and 19:30 and expecting staff
